Requalification of the central axis in Faro's downtown

International Contest

The Contest launched by the Faro City Council foresaw the requalification of the so-called central axis of downtown Faro.

This axis includes the area between Largo de São Francisco and the Railway Station.

The project should thus respond to a standardization of the urban language of the entire area and provide new infrastructure and all the necessary changes to meet the current needs of the city.

Nowadays, in downtown Faro, the Ria Formosa presents itself as a distant element. The only places where we can truly enjoy the landscapes or the close relationship with the water are thehigh buildings with a view or the departure piers. Even when we are a few meters from the water, the presence of the railway is always a disturbing element.

The project's idea defines a guiding principle that consists of giving people back the views, the proximity and their historical relationship with Ria Formosa.

Water as an element of life that outlines the landscape (in a reference to the canals of the Ria) is the motto to unite the spaces and create a continuous path. In this way we intend to create:

Jardim Manuel Bivar

More pedestrian zones and less traffic, while still retaining all existing functions.

Car traffic goes only one way and will be diverted behind the bus station and Hotel Eva, where an underground car park would be created.

The Avenue becomes more pedestrian, stimulating shops, businesses and tourism in this area and providing a qualified entry into the city for those arriving both by train and by bus.

"Avenida Azul" is created in reference to the fact that the water from the Ria Formosa once occupied the site. Historical facts like that can be recounted through phrases painted on the pavement.

A PROJECT DEVELOPED IN COLLABORATION WITH LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT VÍTOR PINA.
